ZIKA is now a days a very common name in Africa and to some extent, ASIA. But it is slowly becoming visible in United States of America and Latin American countries. Brazil is its latest victim. The far and distant areas in U.S.A are also under its effect. ZIKA virus is presently detected in Mexico, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Angola, Kenya, Egypt, India and Indonesia.
ZIKA is caused by a virus which is carried by a species of Aedes mosquito, which bites during day time. The ill effects of ZIKA virus do not appear instantly. The symptoms are detected after quiet sometime of getting infected. This makes ZIKA very dangerous, more than Ebola, Dengue, Chikangunya, or yellow fever.
The world health organization has started a worldwide campaign for awareness against ZIKA.The medical fraternity still does not know clearly the basic reasons and treatment of this disease. As per W.H.O., more than 40 lakh people can be affected by ZIKA worldwide by the end of this year. Disease control and prevention centers are cautioning pregnant women to keep away from infected countries. This includes Latin American countries and Caribbean countries.
The Aedes mosquito responsible to carry ZIKA virus can breed in fresh water stored may be in a bottle cap or a swimming pool. These mosquitoes bite during day time. Water storage must be completely eradicated in order to prevent breeding of these carrier mosquitoes. Some doctors are of the opinion that ZIKA virus may spread from blood transfusion or sexual relation from or with an ZIKA infected person.
The disease resulted by ZIKA virus in new born babies are Microcephally. This makes the size of head of the baby much smaller than a normal baby. In some cases brain in the baby does not develop. Such children may become mentally retarded or hard of hearing. Microcephally can develop in the baby while still in mother’s womb and can damage baby’s brain permanently. However, this does not have any treatment yet.
This ZIKA disease does not have any initial symptoms. This makes the diagnosis very difficult. In some African countries , late stages of ZIKA were detected in some adults. They suffered from high fever, red inflamed eyes, joint pains, red patches on skin etc. They were not admitted in any hospitals. No pathological investigations were made. Nothing could detect presence of ZIKA virus at an early stage.
Only way left to prevent ZIKA is to protect oneself from mosquito bites. Mosquitoes must be eliminated, their breeding must be prevented. One must not travel to infected countries. One must avoid physical relation with infected persons. Blood transfusion from infected donors must be stopped. Prevention in term of vaccination is claimed by an Indian scientist. Efficacy is yet to be proved.
